João Paulo Borges Coelho (JPBC) is one of the most prominent Mozambican writers of contemporary fiction in the post-independence period, and his literary work has been widely acclaimed by literary critics.
In his short story entitled “Os sapatos novos de Josefate Ngwertana” / Josefate Ngwertana’s new shoes (one of five estórias in the second volume of Índicos Indícios II: Meridião), a theme from Greco-Latin mythology – that of the “Twelve Labors of Herakles” – is present both in the symbolic realm of the narrative, and in the configuration of the main character. However, the use that JPBC makes of the mythical hero’s exploits neither constitutes an obvious appropriation nor an explicit adaptation. The Heracles theme is recreated subtly and suggestively, becoming a crucial reference for the unfolding of the story.

In this study, we intend to analyze the main euripidean marks of the characterization of Clytemnestra in two plays from the end of the fifth century BC. Based on the assumption that the tragic genre was rooted in the social reality of the "polis", the mythical themes of revenge, family conflict and war dramatized in intrigue constituted important cultural codes also in the design of secondary characters such us Clytemnestra. Thus, the focus of analysis focuses on the most distinctly differences in the tragic figurations of Clytemnestra in two euripidean plays, "Electra" and "Iphigenia at Aulis", which expressively renovate the mythic matrix, motivating the debate on political, ethical and moral dilemmas also commom to the Athenian society, at the time of the play's original production.

In the Odyssey, the wanderings of a man in search of a fate and involved in a truceless struggle for survival against the natural contingencies of life are responsible for triggering the narration of Ulysses' return travel. In the course of the recountings pertaining to his adventures, several references are made to a series of localized stayings in fantastic places and to encounters with non-human figures, usually of female representation. Through a reading of the well-known erotic episodes involving Circe, Calypso and Nausicaa we seek to show how the dyad epos-eros has contributed to a more humanized characterization of the life experiences undergone by a versatile and astute hero who was able to face all dangers, without ever letting himself be deluded by the temptations that could endanger his nostos.

Influenced by the Sophoclean Antigone, Mário de Sacramento wrote a homonymous play which was published independently, in 1959, in vol. 19, No.186 of “Vértice magazine” and included in the tetralogy entitled Teatro Anatómico in the following year. In this play in one act, Sophocles homonymous tragedy lays
out a metatheatrical resource of critical and reflective nature, in which the intertextual dialogue together with the ancient tragic text promotes a dramatic reading of the unfortunate fate of the survivors of a French family, victim of the German occupation, in the Second World War, who, like the last of the Labdacids, face the suffering caused by extreme circumstances, dictated by insoluble conflicts of human condition. In this dramatic essay by Mário Sacramento, the protagonist is a French woman, Ivonne, who at the time of Maquis chooses the code name
“Antigone”. This study intends to present an analysis of the influence exercised by the Sophocle’s Antigone in this «dramatic essay», regarding the description of the dramatis personae and the development of the action which is based on a critical reflection about Oedipus’s daughter’s motivations and the tragic sense of her actions.
